Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA): An opportunity for Europe - Role of the public sector
SEPA is to be set during the period 2008-2010. The Public sector and its bodies and agencies –especially those in the euro area- should make concrete preparations. Given the large number of payments generated by and towards the public sector, early adoption can make a significant contribution towards building economies of scale and meeting the eGovernment agenda. Moreover, public administrations will benefit considerably from the use of the new SEPA services.
The conference will, among others, explain the status of electronic payments and invoices in Europe and present funding opportunities for public administrations. Expected participants are:
- Representatives from public administrations at management or expert level, including: Ministry of Finance and Treasury, pension and social security administrations, Tax authorities as well as Central procurement departments responsible for payment of goods and services.
- Institutions/providers serving public administrations, with a background in payments either at management level or expert level: commercial banks, governments’ financial agent, postal banks, central banks, etc… but also IT service providers in charge with the technical implementation of payments messages sent and received by the public sector.
Relevant administrations are invited to submit a list of participants by 15 March 2007 at the following address: markt-sepa-conference@ec.europa.eu.
Bridging the Broadband Gap - EU Brussels
Broadband is the backbone of the knowledge society, providing access to advanced public services and richer multimedia content for entertainment, training and work. With broadband connections, new forms of business innovation can transform the lives of individuals, increase social cohesion and contribute to economic growth. But the communities whose economies are most likely to benefit from broadband are currently the worst placed to profit from the Information Society due to lack of connectivity and socio-economic factors.

One Web Day
OneWebDay is one day a year when we all - everyone around the physical globe - can celebrate the Web and what it means to us as individuals, organizations, and communities.
As with Earth Day - an inspiration and model for OneWebDay - it’s up to the celebrants to decide how to celebrate. We encourage all celebrations! Collaboration, connection, creativity, freedom.
By the end of the day, the Web should be just a little bit better than it was before, and we’ll be able to see our connection to it more clearly.
OneWebDay is September 22 every year, starting in 2006.

Open Source ERP solutions
With such a critical position in the enterprise, opting for a commercially supported Open Source tool is a decision taken by more and more companies. By making the right choice is not always easy, and this event will help attendants to take the best decision for their company. All speakers of the event have hands-on experience with ERP systems, and will give attendants a view on what to expect in the deployment of an ERP system, and present open source solutions available to SMEs but also bigger companies. Attendants will see that the “one size fits all” approach is not necessarily the best and that choosing the best tool for their needs is crucial for the success of an ERP deployment.

Safer Internet Day 2010
The 7th edition of Safer Internet Day will be celebrated in Europe, as well as in more than 30 countries around the world, on 9 February 2010 under the slogan "Think before you post!".
New technologies have turned all of us, and mostly young people, into publishers of information, pictures, videos. In addition, due to the new technologies we can all enjoy "fame".
While bringing about new opportunities for personal expression and creativity, new technologies may also lead to embarrassing or even traumatic situations. For example, photos, once posted online, remain online and can be seen by anybody, even years after they have been posted. Posting today photos from a fun party, may have consequences on the way a potential employer considers a job application years later. Therefore, children and teenagers need to be empowered to manage their online identity in a responsible way, to be in control of their own online identity, and at the same time respect other people;s choices of posting or not certain information or photos online.
Digitale week - Belgium

One Web Day
One WebDay, held on September 22 every year since 2006, is a global event aimed at giving all participants in this unprecedented turn in human evolution that is the Internet a chance not only to celebrate it, but also to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining the open-networking principles that have made it the success it is.
OneWebDay 2010 will be held on Wednesday 22 September 2010. The suggested theme for this year’s events is to emphasize three important aspects of the Internet’s existence that ensure it’s continuing health and growth as a public resource:
1) The End-to-End Principle – the principle that allows any application on any user’s machine to directly connect and interact with any application on any other user’s machine, without hindrance.
2) Open Internetworking – Openness is the overarching principle that has ensured the success and growth of the Internet to date. User access, choice and transparency are critical to the success of the Internet and must be incorporated as central features of current and future policy frameworks for the Internet.
3) The Internet model -The Internet is successful in large part due to its unique model: shared global ownership, development based on open standards, and freely accessible processes for technology and policy development. The Internet model is open, transparent, and collaborative. The model relies on processes and products that are local, bottom-up, and accessible to users around the world.

Internet Society and W3C co-chair Identity Workshop - California
The Internet Society is pleased to co-chair a “Workshop on Identity in the Browser” with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to be held in Mountain View, California in May.
As the Web increasingly becomes a focal point for economic and social activity, there is an urgent need for it to support trustworthy, widely-applicable digital identity management.
It is critical that the Web support a high level of identity assurance, privacy protection, and security. To address this requirement, client-side technologies like browsers play an integral role. This is true for enterprise activity, effective government engagement, and even social information accessed over the Web.
To address these issues, the Internet Society is co-chairing with the W3C a “Workshop on Identity in the Browser” to take place 24-25 May, 2011 hosted by the Mozilla Foundation Mountain View, California. Workshop participants will investigate strategies to facilitate the development and deployment of improved identity authentication and authorization technologies across the Web. Also included in the workshop will be explorations into the operational, policy, and legal issues that must be addressed by the solutions.
Anyone may participate and there is no fee to participate. All participants are, however, required to submit a position paper by 22 April.
For more details about the workshop, to submit a paper, or send an expression of interest, please visit:

BIT’s 1st Congress of U-Home (WCUH-2011)
Aim of the Conference
For many years researchers have been working to create a smart home. Initially researchers have focused on developing a technical infrastructure and explored issues around user input. However, more recently people have begun exploring how technical augmentation of the home can improve the quality of people’s lives. In the home of the future, Home automation technology is becoming as synonymous with sustainability as it is with convenience. Incorporating smart home technology into a new or existing structure makes it easier to reduce energy consumption and the carbon footprint a home or business creates. People could enjoy save energy and green their home using home automation. The purpose of WCUH-2011 is to provide a world-class meeting place for information exchanges and trade fair for promoting Smart home novel technologies.

About Connecting Generations
This topic looks at the reach of the online world across all generations and cultures and encourages families to work together to stay safe online. Whether you are 5, 40 or 75 years old, whether you use the internet once a month or several times a day - each person has something different to bring to the table that can help shape our online experiences and our understanding of online competences and safety. We all have a role to play in ensuring that every child is safe online.
Today our offline and online worlds are strongly connected, from families communicating via webcam with relatives and friends abroad to children doing their homework online. The online world is a unique arena where people of all ages can learn together and from each other, especially regarding online safety. Tech savvy youngsters can teach their elders how to use new technologies, while grandparents can draw on their life experiences to advise younger generations on how to stay safe online, as they discover the digital world together.
